- Story Text: The armies of the United States and South Korea held a combined live-fire exercise on Wednesday (March 25) as a part of their annual military drill Foal Eagle.
Troops of the two countries staged the live-fire drill featuring a wide array of aviation, artillery, armour and infantry assets at an artillery range complex in Pocheon, about 50km (31 miles) northeast of Seoul.
The military operation was a part of the Foal Eagle exercise which runs from March 2 until April 24.
"The Foal Eagle is an annual bilateral exercise between the Republic of Korea and the United States. And so on an annual basis, we come together to increase our training readiness and our ability to operate together in the event a contingency arises, we would be able to perform as best as possible," said U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Neal Mayi.
The drill includes about 300 soldiers from the U.S. and South Korea, four American Bradley Fighting Vehicles, two K200 armoured vehicles, four K1 tanks as well as fourteen helicopters.
Earlier this month, North Korea fired two short-range missiles off its east coast, hours before the U.S-South Korean military exercises were scheduled to begin.
North Korea regularly protests the drills, which it calls a rehearsal for war, and recently stepped up its own air, sea and ground military exercises, adding to tension between the rival Koreas.
About 28,000 U.S. troops have been stationed in South Korea since the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
