- Story Text: Flood waters in southern Germany have continued rising
as thousands of emergency workers and volunteers worked around
the clock to bring residents into safety and to secure
buildings threatened by the massive amounts of water.
While the floodwater near the Bavarian Alps receded
slightly, the level of the Danube rose dramatically. On Sunday
(May 23) afternoon, both the rivers Iller and Danube continued
rising at a rate of six centimeters per hour.
At the convergence of the two rivers, in the city of Neu
Ulm, a hospital and a jail had to be evacuated. In Munich,
police closed bridges over the swelling river Isar, which
flows
through the heart of the city.
Authorities said that over 1,000 people had been evacuated
so far.Police called on residents in the areas endangered by
floods to drive their cars out of underground garages, to
secure oil tanks and to retreat to the upper stories of their
homes.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in several areas
-- including international ski resort Garmisch-Partenkirchen
-- after the flooding, which also hit Switzerland and the
western Austrian province of Vorarlberg.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which on Saturday could not be
reached by land, was reachable again Sunday, but the state of
emergency was not lifted as new wave of flood waters is
expected to reach the area early next week.
The unusually high water levels resulted from melting snow
in the Alps and heavy rainfall in southern Germany, Austria
and Switzerland over the past three days.
