- Story Text: South Korean civic group members and students have
protested in front of a local U.S. military base over death of
two school girls killed by a U.S. armoured vehicle two weeks
ago.
About 30 South Korean activists and students
demonstrated outside a U.S. military base on Friday (June 29)
following an accident two weeks ago in which a U.S. army
vehicle killed two girls during a training exercise.
Minor scuffles broke out when police stopped the
protesters from setting up tents to stage a sit-in.
The demonstrators, gathered at Camp Red Cloud, north of
Seoul, demanded a sincere apology, the punishment of the
military officer who is responsible for the accident and a
thorough investigation of the tragedy.
The armoured vehicle ran over the two teenage students in
a suburb of Seoul on June 13.
A Korean civic group has released the still photos of the
accident site and victims.
U.S. military officials in South Korea have apologised for
the accident.
On June 18, the U.S. military held a candle-lit vigil and
memorial service for the victims at the base near the heavily
fortified border with North Korea.
Korean protesters have held a series of protest rallies
in front of the base, throwing rocks at U.S. soldiers, and
tearing off signboards and symbols at the gate of the base.
The accident happened three days after anti-U.S.protesters
clashed with police over the death of a South Korean worker at
another U.S. military base.
The worker died after suffering an electric shock.
The U.S. has 37,000 troops in South Korea, a military
presence designed to deter communist North Korea but which is
also a source of friction with communities near the U.S.
bases.
