- Title: United Kingdom: Design For The World's First 1000 Mph (1609 Kph) Car The Bloodhound SSC Unveiled
- Date: 19th July 2010
- Summary: On July 19, 2010, the British team behind a plan to smash the current land speed record unveiled a full scale model of the car it hoped would travel at more than a thousand miles an hour. Three years in the planning, construction of the Bloodhound SSC, or super-sonic car, was about to commence, with the record attempt slated for 2012 in South Africa. The same team, led by Briton Richard Noble, held the current record of 763 mph (1300 kph) set in 1997. That car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Andy Green, who became the first man to travel at supersonic speed on land. Green was also to be Bloodhounds driver, and if the car reached its planned speed he would not only break his own land speed record but also take the low-level air speed record. Powered by a combination of a Typhoon fighter's jet engine and a Falcon rocket the car would develop 135,000 horse power or 180 times the power of a Formula One car. The record attempt was to take place on a dry lake bed. The Bloodhound would take 4. 5 miles (7. 2 kms) and 45 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 1000 mph (1609 kph).
