- Story Text: Mark Aebli of the United States won the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open Gold Championship at the Fanling course on March 3. Aebli, an unheralded 27-year-old from Texas, pulled away from former champions Greg Norman and Chen Tsw-Ming in impressive style. Carrying a two-stroke lead over Norman into the final round, he chipped in for a birdie at the second and knocked in a 10-metre (30 feet) putt at the third to give himself a strong start. Norman was never able to mount a serious challenge and Aebli showed character to avoid any catastrophes -- giving him the 25,000 US dollar first prize. The new champion, whose score was 270, had previously won only four small tournaments. Chen snatched second place four strokes behind, by sinking a 4-metre (12 feet) putt for a birdie on the final green. The shot, which only just made the distance, meant he pipped Norman for the runner's-up prize of 16,660 dollars by just one stroke. Norman, who failed to produce the electrifying strokes that have swept him to world prominence, had to be content with third place and the 9,390 dollars prize.
