- Story Text: In a ceremony in Addis Ababa on Saturday (4 December), Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie re-dedicated the "Lion of Judah" monument, which has been returned after being removed to Rome by invading Italian Fascist forces during the thirties.
It was the second time in his lifetime that he had performed the ceremony, the first occasion being 42 years ago when he dedicated it to Emperor Menelik II.
The monument, which has come to symbolise the Imperial Ethiopian Court, has been restored to its original position in front of the France-Ethiopian Railway Company's Building. It was returned with other historical monuments by the Italian Government.
SYNOPSIS: In a ceremony in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa on Saturday, Emperor Hails Selassie dedicated the "Lion of Judah" monument for the second time in his lifetime. The Emperor first dedicated the monument 42 years ago to Emperor Menelik II, and it has come to symbolism the Imperial Ethiopian Court. But in the 1930's the monument was dismantled and removed to Rome by invading Italian Fascist Troops.
Now it has been returned to its place in front of the France-Ethiopian Railway Company, with other historical monuments, in accordance with what Emperor Selassie has called "the new understanding between Ethiopia and the new Italy".
Emperor Selassie said at the ceremony that historical monuments like the Lion are the pride of a nation through which it symbolically conveys to generations to come the achievements of its distinguished sons of the past. He said despite the wartime invasion and occupation of the country by Fascist troops, Ethiopia presently enjoys good relations with Italy, and works with that country for the promotion of world peace.
