- Story Text: Argentine actor and star of the Oscar-winning movie, "The Secret in Their Eyes" Ricardo Darin, said on Saturday (August 14) he was "flattered, but a little uncomfortable" with being considered the face of Argentine film.
"It seems a little imprudent for me to accept being the face of Argentine film. I would like to be the body of Argentine film, above all in some areas," he said to the laughter of the audience.
The actor spoke on the final day of the Latin American Film Festival held in Lima.
Fifty-three-year-old Darin was invited to the event to be honoured with an achievement award in the closing ceremony.
He discussed some of his past work, joking that he found his collaboration with director Fabian Bielinsky in the 2005 film "El Aura" to be some of his hardest work.
"If I had to quickly pick a film, I believe that the one that cost me the most work basically for trying to understand his way of thinking, is the person from a film called "El Aura" - it is the the person of Fabian Bielinsky. He complicated our lives, as much Bielinsky as I, but we enjoyed doing it very much," he said.
During his speech, he added that other Argentine films should also be recognized for their cultural impacts.
He also said that the end of the Argentine dictatorship formed a generation of filmmakers that focused on one theme, but that ensuing generations of young people had more freedom to pursue other topics in their movies.
Darin added that Latin America film had a lot of potential, but that it would require a change in thinking.
"What happens is that we have to have a little more confidence in ourselves. Still, we have put our gaze in wrong places. We have to know to look a little more inward. I have great confidence in Latin American film," he said.
He also discussed future projects, saying a film he had been working on in collaboration with Brazilian director Walter Salles had temporarily been put on hold.
"The film by Walter Salles is a project of a very beautiful book that he wrote - it is the story of two brothers that don't know each other and are going to the south of Argentina because of the death of their father, who was a sailor. It is a fantastic story that we were going to do at the end of this year, but because of not economic issues, but personal ones, it was delayed and it will be done at the end of next year,"he said.
The Brazilian film, "Hotel Atlantico" came away with the "Best Film" title for this year's festival. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
