French mineral water company Perrier bounced back from its recent setback on Wednesday (March 7), as the familiar green bottles returned to the shelves.
The bottles carried "New production" stickers, meaning that the water inside was clear of the benzene contamination found recently in Perrier, which led to the costly withdrawal of the product worldwide.
The benzene was considered a health risk to consumers. Following a big clean-up at the bottling plant, shops in Paris where stocks were withdrawn a month ago said customers were buying the water at the same price as before.
Some barmen in Paris said their customers had continued to drink Perrier, despite the bad publicity.
Perrier will not know for some months whether its market share has been seriously affected in the long term by the bad publicity. The company has launched a major advertising campaign to reassure customers about the safety of its mineral water.
