  • Story Text: Pope Benedict blesses Ferraris on St. Peter's Square.


    Crowds on on St. Peter's Square were joined by
    around 30 Ferrari sports cars and their owners on Sunday
    (June 19) for a special Papal blessing.

    The red and yellow vehicles, owned by members of
    Italy's Passione Rossa club, pulled into a cordonned-off
    area of the square at 1045 local time (08:45 GMT).

    Members of the club said the event had been initiated
    by the late Pope John Paul II and they had received the
    invitation several months ago.

    "The Ferrari Club Roma Passione Rossa received
    an invitation from the Vatican to bring here the cars
    belonging to the members of the club .....to display the
    cars here and hopefuly get the Pope's blessing," said
    Massimo Massini, a Ferrari owner.

    The event was staged in cooperation with "Easy-Rider
    World Association, an organisation working to promote the
    needs of young people. Members of the group accompanied the
    Ferraris onto the square.

    "We can see and and soon we'll be able to hear "Easy
    Rider", Pope Benedict said from the window at the end of
    his Angelus.

    It was the second time such a blessing had taken place.

    Earlier in the Angelus, Pope Benedict's called for a
    spirit of welcoming and understanding toward refugees as he
    marked Monday's (June 20) U.N. World Refugee Day.
