- Story Text: Mourners gathered outside the courthouse of the Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi on Monday (July 18) to attend a funeral for two rebel fighters killed in clashes with Libyan troops at Brega.
Ten Libyan rebels were reported killed and 172 wounded in an attack on the eastern oil port of Brega on Saturday (July 16), while insurgents drove back forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi in the west.
"I would like to thank my God, because my son has become a martyr. It is a virtue granted to us. He was fighting for the country, not to defend anyone. I'm so happy that my son fought to death and that he did not escape," said Salem Mohamed, father of one of the rebel fighters killed in Brega on Saturday.
The rebel fighters have encircled Brega, an oil export terminal with a refinery and chemical plant which for months marked the eastern limit of Gaddafi's control, rebel spokesman Shamsiddin Abdulmolah said.
More than 30 people on both sides in the conflict have been reported killed in fighting over the weekend. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
