Summary:The war between China and its Japanese invaders reached a critical stage at this time in 1937. On December 6 the Japanese were literally at the gates of Nanking, former capital of China. Inside the city, thousands of inhabitants and thousands more refugees scrambled to escape the bombing and shelling. Six days later, the city fell.
