- Story Text: A replica of the original German plane, the Storch which is German for stork, used by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War has arrived in Serbia... designed and constructed by a former Yugoslav, now living in Australia.
The Storch has its own special place in history.
It was involved in the rescue of Mussolini from the now famous Italian resort of Campo Imperatore, 10,000 above sea level on the Gran Sasso mountain.
In August 1996 - almost fifty-three years exactly after the daring mission - Nestor Slepcev, a Yugolsav living in Australia for the last thirty years, carried out a re-enactment.
It had taken twelve years to get approval.
He landed his Slepcev Storch Mk4, with Rotax 912 motor, at Gran Sasso.
Nestor's business is Storch Aviation Australia - he's been flying for over ten years as well as designing aircraft.
By 1991-92 he'd planned and constructed the first two Single Seat Slepcev Storch under Australian category 95-10, as well as a Single Seat Low Wing Monoplane and Yugo, his twin KFM 30hp aircraft.
In 1993-94 Nestor concentrated on producing the Slepcev Storch as a Two Seat Tandem aircraft, at the same time working on the Me-109-G2.
The original Storch was designed in Germany in 1936 by Dr. Gerhard Fieseler, and was used by the Luftwaffe in the Second World War as a reconnaissance, utility and personnel carrying aircraft.
The Slepcev Storch, and its subsequent related models, is Nestor's brainchild, developed at his factory at Port Macquarie in Australia... it's a three-quarter version of the original, modified in areas for simplicity.
The Slepcev Storch has now been seen throughout the world at various airshows including the world's biggest Oshkosh in the United States and the Sunn Fun airshow in Florida.
To date more than 100 aircraft have been sold - 60% as ready-to-fly and 40% as kits. Model plans are not available for purchase. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
