- Story Text: Australian rockers INXS kicked off the African leg of their Elegantly Wasted World Tour on Thursday (May 29) with a concert in Cape Town, South Africa.
The band will be performing songs from their latest hit album, "Elegantly Wasted", which re-established INXS at the top of the charts after a period when they seemed to have been sidelined by younger bands.
"Elegantly Wasted" is their tenth album. The preceding two albums failed to achieve massive sales, although "Welcome to Wherever You Are" was acclaimed by critics.
Singer Michael Hutchence has has recently received a great deal of newspaper coverage in the United Kingdom, but the news was related to his personal life rather than his work with INXS. He was dating supermodel Helena Christensen, but left her for Bob Geldof's wife, Paula Yates. He has since had a baby - Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily - with Yates ans the spotlight is once more on the music.
INXS started out on the Australian pub circuit in 1977. Their music helped to create a modern a modern rock sound with such hits as "What You Need" and "New Sensation", and the band was filling stadiums all over the world.
Once their popularity flagged, the band's members adopted a low profile until Hutchence and keyboard player/guitarist Andrew Farriss started work on "Elegantly Wasted". Also in the group are Farriss' brother Jon (drums) and Tim (guitar), as well as Garry Beers (bass) and Kirk Pengilly (guitar/saxophone). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
