- Story Text: INTR0:- Dustin Hoffman continues his collaboration with Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson in the new science-fiction thriller "Sphere." Based on a decade-old novel by the best-selling author of "Jurassic Park" and "Disclosure," Michael Crichton, the film had its world premiere in Los Angeles last week (February 11).
Hoffman and Levinson joined co-star Sharon Stone at the premiere.
This is Hoffman's fourth film with Levinson. They previously worked together in "Sleepers," and "Wag the Dog", as well as "Rain Man," for which both won Oscars.
In this latest collaboration, Hoffman plays Dr Norman Goodman, a psychologist who is summoned by the government to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The reason? They've discovered a massive spacecraft that appears to have been submerged, 1000 feet below the surface on the ocean floor, for almost 300 years.
Along on the mission is a biochemist named Beth Halperin, played by Sharon Stone; a sceptical mathematician named Harry Adams, played by Samuel L.Jackson; and the mysterious team leader Barnes, played by Peter Coyote.
Together, they dive to the floor of the ocean and enter the spacecraft, only to discover that what lurks inside has the power to reach into their minds, learn their worst fears and make them come true.
The film was shot on massive sets built inside abandoned hangars at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, a recently closed 142-year-old facility in San Francisco Bay.The sets included the huge underwater "Habitat," the mini-submarine hangar dome and the 50-foot-long coral cave and working airlock that leads into the spacecraft, as well as ocean floor seascapes.
The actors had to endure hours of work inside specially-designed wet suits that weighed 175 pounds each.
They also all had to be certified deep sea divers by the time production started. The production employed an experienced dive master to teach Hoffman, Stone, Jackson and the other cast members how to function effectively inside the wet suits.
