- Story Text: "American Beauty" took top honours at the 57th Annual Golden Globe Awards on SUnday (January 23) capturing prizes for best picture, best director and best screenplay.
American Beauty's trifecta put it ahead of a crowded field heading into Oscar season in Hollywood.
In receiving his award for best director, Mendes thanked the film's veteran actors and stars, Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening "for trusting me" and thanked the movie's backers at DreamWorks for "letting me make the movie I wanted to make".
In the category for best motion picture comedy, computer-animated hit "Toy Story 2" was a surprise winner.
Veteran Denzel Washington and relative newcomer Hilary Swank grabbed top acting honours.
Washington took the Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture drama for playing one time boxing contender Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in "The Hurricane", a film about Carter's struggle to get out of jail.Swank won best actress in a drama for playing an ill-fated, cross dressing lesbian in "Boys Don't Cry".
Washington appeared on stage with Carter and said "this man is all about love...he has lost about 7,300 days of his life and this is about love." He was referring to Carter's lack of bitterness at being wrongfully convicted and jailed twice for three murders he never committed in the Mid 1960s.
Popular comedian Jim Carrey, whose acting was snubbed last year at the Oscars, took home his second straight Golden Globe award for best actor on Sunday, putting him in contention again for an Oscar.
Carrey won the Golden Globe for best actor, comedy, for his performance as the legendary off-the-wall comedian Andy Kaufman in "Man on the Moon".
Carrey won a Globe last year for best actor in a drama for "The Truman Show", about a boy who grows up at the centre of a television show.
"Sure, I'll take this ", said the comedian, adding "I am the Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes", referring to the three time Oscar winner.
Backstage, Carrey was asked about his chances for an Oscar and said he had "high hopes" of winning one some day.Then he sang "Anyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree plant", from the song "High Hopes".
In the category of best actress in a comedy, British actress Janet Mc Teer won an unexpected Golden Globe for her role as a freewheeling Southern woman raising a daughter in the independent movie "Tumbleweeds".While she is mostly unknown to U.S.movie audiences, McTeer recently won a Tony, Broadway's highest honour for her performance in "A Doll's House".
Veteran Tom Cruise and rising star Angelina Jolie took two early acting honours.
Cruise was named best supporting actor for his portrayal of a motivational speaker who teaches men how to pick up women in "Magnolia", and Jolie took best supporting actress honours for her role as a mental patient in "Girl, Interrupted".
Cruise said he didn't expect to win the award and said he just flew into Los Angeles for the express purpose of attending the show.
"I'm a little jet-lagged and pretty amazed right now", he said.
Capping the evening was the bestowal of the Cecil B.
