- Story Text: Deauville has honoured one of Hollywood's finest leading ladies - Susan Sarandon with an achievement award for her contribution to the big screen.
The 53-year old actress attended the 26th American film festival in Deauville along with her lifetime partner, Tim Robbins.
The tribute which recognizes Sarandon for her diverse body of work - to date - was chosen by festival organizers as a result of her popularity in Europe and her choice of interesting roles.
Sarandon who looks upon the award as a 'Midlife Achievement Award' said she was delighted to be honoured along with such great names as producer Dino De Laurentiis and Leslie Caron at this year's festival.
"All of these people are just amazing and to be honoured with them is quite wonderful," she said.
Sarandon has made her mark playing ordinary women who rise to the extraordinary and by giving middle-aged roles a touch of the sensual. Before winning her Oscar for Best Actress with "Dead Man Walking", Sarandon received four Best Actress nominations for performances in "Atlantic City", "Thelma and Louise", "Lorenzo's Oil" and "The Client".
But it was her role in the 1988 comedy "Bull Durham", that confirmed her arrival as a leading actress. It's one of the films she remembers most fondly - not least because it was where she met her partner, Tim Robbins.
"I have to say Bull Durham was very special because of Tim Robbins who's here. Meeting him and starting that relationship and it was also very important because it was the first role that I'd been given that I was not overqualified for was a part that was bigger than I was and I was treated with great respect and I had a great time and it ended up rejuvenating my belief in team playing of making a film where everybody's pushing in the same direction and everybody cares about things so it meant a lot to me in a lot of areas," she said.
When she teamed up with Geena Davis for the film "Thelma and Louise", Sarandon became a household name, not least because she worked alongside newcomer Brad Pitt, whose career was launched by the film.
But, the movie which was to have a huge impact on Sarandon's life she says - was "Dead Man Walking" in which she starred opposite Sean Penn. Directed by Robbins, the film changed Sarandon's beliefs and along with Sister Helen Prejean - the author of the book of the same name upon which the film was based Sarandon became a leading campaigner in the fight to ban the death penalty in the United States.
"After I did Dead Man Walking, I knew that it was because of my children that I was against the death penalty because you cannot define a society you cannot send out a message that it's all right for someone to kill. You cannot make a separation between your children and the state. You can't say to your children that you can't use violence to settle a dispute and at the same time use violence to punish people that's not a civilized country. And the kind of society that I want my children to be part of doesn't kill people, I don't believe in war and I am against violence across the board now," she said.
The actress who is currently 'directing her kids' full time, says she's not passionate enough about any particular subject at the moment to want to start directing a film.
Having recently played smaller roles in "Rugrats, The Movie"
and Robbins' film "Cradle Will Rock", she's content playing 'Mom' for the moment.
With Morgan Freeman, Mickey Rooney and Tim Robbins in attendance, Sarandon accepted her award from President of Deauville's film jury Neil Jordan adding that it would take pride of place in her bathroom along with the other 'favourites'.
