- Story Text: Jack Nicholson takes on a role on the right side of the law for a change, playing a homicide detective in his second collaboration with actor turned director Sean Penn. The pair attended the World Premiere of "The Pledge" in Los Angeles.
The Pledge is Penn's third feature film as a director.
His first was 1991's "The Indian Runner," while his sophomore effort was 1995's "The Crossing Guard," which also marked his first collaboration with Jack Nicholson.
In "The Pledge," Nicholson plays retiring homicide detective Jerry Black, who takes one final case on the day of his retirement party. It involves the brutal murder of a young girl.
In the course of notifying the girl's parents, he makes a solemn promise to her mother to find and bring to justice the killer. But when his colleagues on the police force, played by Aaron Eckhart and Sam Shepard, believe they've caught the guilty party, Jerry isn't satisfied.
Following his instincts, he embarks on an intensive crusade to find the murderer, during which months turn into years and rational police work turns into a personal obsession.
As the case drags on and threatens Jerry's very sanity, his methods and motives for solving the crime become dangerously blurred.
Also in the cast is Penn's off-screen wife Robin Wright Penn, who plays a small town waitress and single mother of a young girl who befriends Jerry and gets entangled in his plans to trap the true culprit.
"The Pledge" opens in theaters throughout the United States on Friday, January 19. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
