- Story Text: Mick Jagger, Sting, Dougray Scott, Jeremy Northam and Michael Apted managed to put on a brave face as Enigma opened in London to an audience unlikely to be ready for a war film in the current climate. But the woman everyone was waiting for, Kate Winslet, failed to make an appearance.
British actress and star of Titanic, Kate Winslet, pulled out at the last minute from what would have been her first showbiz appearance since splitting from her husband.
Winslet was due to join fellow actors this evening at the royal premiere of her latest film Enigma, but said in the light of "recent personal events'' she felt it would be better to stay out of the limelight. Winslet, 25, split from film director Jim Threapleton earlier this month amid media speculation she was having an affair with dashing Enigma co-star Dougray, who also recently split from his wife. Both have denied the rumours.
Dougray was happy however to talk of his delight at working with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger who produces this, his first movie. Jagger bought the rights to Robert Harris's novel Enigma as soon as he read it. He's excited by the film but did consider delaying the premiere considering the current climate. "President Bush and Guiliani said we've got to go back to work so here we are."
Enigma, which award-winning writer Tom Stoppard adapted from Harris's novel, is a fast-paced tale about the sparky British code breakers who cracked the German navy's secret ciphers turning the tide of the Second World War in Britain's favor. Winslet plays the movie's heroine Hester Wallace who assists a maths genius (Tom Jericho played by Dougray Scott) in his code-breaking endeavours. She said in a statement on Monday: ``I'm very sorry not to be there to celebrate the premiere of Enigma of which I'm very proud and also to pay my respects to those lives lost in the recent tragedy in New York. In light of recent events I feel that, for the sake of myself and my family, a short time out of the spotlight would be beneficial.'' But whether the press would have been concerned today with Winslet's love life is not certain. Celebrity culture and Hollywood fare in general has been seriously altered according to Michael Apted. "I don't see in the foreseeable future how people could contemplate doing major films about terrorism and blowing things up and whatever because the truth of the matter is so much more terrifying than what Hollywood turns up."
Apted directed The World Is Not Enough and was tipped to take on the next Bond film. He's not and he doesn't envy the task of the new team working out a new subject for 007. But he is pleased he raised the profile of the code breakers at Bletchley Park.
In March 1943, the code breakers at this top secret Station X in Britain were facing a nightmare. Nazi U boats unexpectedly changed the code by which they communicated with each other and German High Command. The brilliant young mathematician Tom Jericho was their only hope.
But Jericho has another equally baffling enigma of his own to unravel. Claire (Saffron Burrows), with whom he has fallen in love, has disappered from Bletchley just when the authorities suspect there may be a spy at the Park. Hester (Winslet) helps Jericho get on top of both the mysteries.
Enigma goes on general release in Britain on 28 September.
