- Story Text: Gere was in Madrid on Monday (June 10) to promote "Unfaithful" a film which some critics say might finally destroy the lothario image that has dogged the Amercian actor throughout his career.
"Unfaithful" is directed by Briton, Adrian Lyne and co-stars Frenchman Olivier Martinez and American Diane Lane.
Richard Gere was in Madrid on Monday (June 10) to promote "Unfaithful" a film which might finally destroy the lothario image that has dogged the American actor throughout his career.
"Unfaithful" is directed by Briton, Adrian Lyne and co-stars Frenchman Olivier Martinez and American Diane Lane.
Gere said people found it hard to imagine him swapping his heart-throb status for a role as a cuckold.
"Everyone asks me about this thing. 'Wait a minute, you're the gigolo. How can there be another gigolo?' But the truth is that Olivier (Martinez) is much better than me. I guarantee all the ladies in the room he's much better." joked Gere to a packed press conference.
The 52 year old actor plays a man whose life changes drastically when he discovers that his wife (played by Diane Lane) is cheating on him with an attractive, young Frenchman (played by Olivier Martinez).
"I said sure, if it's going to allow a relationship to get larger and to expand and to become more intimate because of that forgiveness, of course. But I said that and there were four women in the room and all four women went (mimes show of disapproval) and I said, 'You don't buy that at all?' and all four women went, no, they wouldn't forgive, no way." said Gere, responding to questions asking whether he would forgive infidelity.
The actor's popularity remained as great as ever amongst the numerous fans who had crept into the room and gardens where the press conference was being held. The fans mingled with the photographers and television cameras and shouted at Gere, begging him to sign autographs and to pose for photos with them.
In the press conference itself, made up largely of women, the ladies' man had to politely brush off some rather personal questions.
"I would like to know if, apart from being an actor, you do other things. Do you run any businesses? What do you do?" asked a middle-aged woman, adding "When you're not acting, what do you do from when you get up to when you go to bed? Please don't leave anything out."
Gere's star-presence practically eclipsed Lyne and Martinez, who were also participating in the press conference.
The British director claimed that "Unfaithful" was not a remake of "The Unfaithful Woman", a French film made by Claude Chabrol in 1968.
"I first saw the Chabrol movie 30 years ago and I was fascinated by it and said to myself 'Don't even think of touching it because it's so good". But of course, inevitably, I did. But I think that this is only very loosely based on his movie." said the director of box-office hits "Flashdance", "9 1/2 weeks" and "Fatal Attraction".
Gere, Lyne and Martinez attended the film's Spanish premiere in Madrid on Monday evening, where they were greeted by hundreds of screaming fans. The loudest squeals were reserved for Richard Gere.
