- Story Text: It was pretty big news for a pretty small dog.
Big Boss, the Yorkshire Terrier, is officially the world's smallest dog.
After years of trying, breeder Wilaiwan Kanjanakhom has come up with a Yorkshire Terrier that stands all of 4.7 inches (12 centimetres) tall, weighs 480 grammes (17 ounces) and measures 5.25 inches (13.5 centimetres) head to tail.
These days, the Yorkshire Terrier seems to hold the monopoly on being the smallest dog in the Guinness Book of Records. The previous record-holder was also a Yorkshire Terrier, Thumbelina who weighed 567 grammes, was 5.5 inches tall and eight inches long.
Wilaiwan said she accomplished her feat by feeding Big Boss two 25-gramme (one ounce) meals per day and keeping a close eye on his weight. He spent his first year scooting around an air-conditioned room - Yorkshire Terriers are cold climate dogs.
Not satisfied with one Guinness record, Wilaiwan wants to go smaller yet. Pocket-sized Big Boss can expect his offspring to be palm-sized, pint-aized, maybe even peanut-sized.
Yorkshire Terriers were first bred in northern England more than one hundred years ago for size and agility so they could be used to hunt rats in coal mines. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
