- Story Text: The 43rd International Eucharistic Congress focused on the ill and infirmed of August 14. Thousands of crippled, ill and blind people lined up at Nairobi's Nyayo Stadium to be blessed and take communion. The theme of the day was "The Sick and the Suffering People in the World". It was the fourth day of the Congress, which has attracted more than 4000 pilgrims from throughout the world. Although the four-yearly Congress was described as a spiritual pilgrimage, the centre-piece of the event was the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the Christian ceremony in which bread and wine are consecrated and consumed. The celebration dates back to the first Holy Thursday on the eve of Jesus Christ's death. The highlight of the event was expected to come on August 16, when Pope John Paul the Second was due to arrive. The theme of the Congress, "Eucharist and the Christian Family" was chosen by the Pope himself, and reflection on this theme was being promoted through seminars and meetings. The aim of the talks was to explore the theology of the Eucharist in the light of the theme.
