- Story Text: Chinese queen of canto pop Faye Wong has been spreading her wings overseas.Set against a stunning stage backdrop and suspended high in the air, the diva of Asian rock performed to Singaporean fans last weekend (February 13-14).
An elaborate stage was built for Faye Wong's two-day Singapore concert last weekend. But the spectacular effects didn't quite make up for the fact that the ice goddess, as she is known in Asia, does not dance.
Voted one of GQ magazine's 50 coolest women in the 1996 poll, Wong's first concert here in four years boasts a revolving platform that also lifts Wong in the air, giving the audience views of their star from every angle.
Playing to a subdued audience, Wong was dressed simply unlike the flamboyant costumes she usually wears.
Drawing influences from around the world, Wong is one of the few artistes who can bring vibes together from the Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Siouxie And The Banshees and Teresa Teng. She says she'd like to do more collaborative works, such as her project with The Cocteau Twins, next time, though, she says she'd like to work with other Chinese artistes.
Together with her eclectic mix of Eastern and Western styles of music, comes Western style fame for Wong.Fiercely protective of her privacy, the singer has become more complacent about the media frenzy which surrounds her personal life.
Born in China, Wong migrated to Hong Kong when she was 18, almost ten years and 25 albums later, Wong's reputation has grown to huge proportions. But she says her heart is still in China.
One of her hopes for her homeland is that the music scene in Mainland China will have a chance to grow. She says the market for music in China has enormous potential, but it has to develop further if it is to catch up with the cultural musical melting pots of Taiwan and Hong Kong.
After Singapore, Wong will soon go on to perform in Los Angeles. She says in the United States Western music is naturally very dominant, so her performances there attract mostly Chinese fans desperate to catch a dose of Asian sounds.
Wong has just completed a string of concerts in China and Hong Kong. After her two dates in Singapore, she'll be heading to Japan and then Las Vegas.Wong has a two year old daughter, but motherhood doesn't slow down her busy schedule.
As well as touring, the Chinese chameleon intends to release a deluge of singles and even star in a film. But whatever the popster does, the fans, or 'Fayenatics' will always want more. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
