- Story Text: The 69-year-old former general left Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, in the early evening of Tuesday (May 31) shortly after arriving with a Serbian government jet that was hauled into a hangar, out of sight of the media.
His lawyer appealed against the extradition to the Hague prison earlier in the day.
His arrest on Thursday, which triggered protests by Serb ultra-nationalists in Serbia and Bosnia, and swift extradition will smooth Serbia's progress towards candidacy for European Union membership.
Two police helicopters left the airport, one of which whisked him to the tribunal's Scheveningen detention centre. The vicinity was sealed off by Dutch police.
Following Mladic's transfer to The Hague, a panel of judges will be appointed and Mladic must appear in court "without delay", usually 12 or 24 hours after a suspect's arrival.
Mladic is accused of orchestrating the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo in which 10,000 civilians were killed and the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys from the town of Srebrenica in July 1995.
Following Mladic's transfer to The Hague, a panel of judges will be appointed and Mladic must appear in court "without delay", usually 12 or 24 hours after his arrival.
At his initial court appearance, the indictment will be read to Mladic and he will be asked to enter a plea. If he pleads guilty, judges will set a date for sentencing.
If he pleads not guilty, a pre-trial judge will be appointed and regular status conferences will be held to discuss pre-trial issues. During this time the indictment can also be amended. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
