- Story Text: Former Australian diplomat gets 13 years for child
sex abuse in Bali.
A Bali court sentenced a former Australian diplomat
William Stuart Brown, 51, to 13 years in prison and fined
him 150 million Rupiah (US$ 17000) on charges of sexually
abusing two Balinese boys, aged 14 and 16.
The sentenced was heavier than that demanded by the
prosecutors. Prosecutors at the Karangasem district court
on the resort island had sought 12 years jail for lewd
conduct.
Two teenage boys said they were paid to have sexual
intercourse on a beach with the former diplomat.
"The defendant has been proven guilty of conducting a
series of lewd acts against minors and we sentence him to
13 years in prison and order him to pay a fine of 150
million Rupiah," presiding judge I Nyoman Sutama told the
court.
Brown spurted expletives and showed his fist to the
judge as the judge read out the sentence-- while the
audience clapped and cheered the verdict.
Brown also known as Tony served as Australian diplomat
in Indonesia from 1982 to 1984 and retired in 1996 to live
in Indonesia.
The father of one of the victim's welcomed the sentence.
"We leave it up to the due process of law (Are you
satisfied with the sentence?")."
" I think the sentence justified his actions, I thank
the panel of judges" said Ida Bagus Made Buruan.
His aunt was emotional but was glad it was over.
"Most important is that Tony will soon be taken back
to his country. I don't want to seen him here anymore" said
the boy's aunt Dayu Nyoman
Lestari, referring to Brown's nickname.
Brown's case brought the problem of child sex abuse in
Bali into the spotlight in Australia-- coming as it did
amid reports that paedophiles were adopting or fostering
poverty-stricken children on the island, which has been
struggling to rebuild its economy and tourism after
bombings in October 2002 killed 202 people.
Australian child sex abuse watchdog Child Wise had said
it was concerned about the growing numbers of reports of
child abuse in Bali since 2001 when it presented a list of
14 suspected paedophiles in Bali, mostly Australians, to
Australian police
