- Story Text: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says final status negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians will begin on Monday (January 14).
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday (January 13) said the most serious peace talks in seven years between Israel and Palestine would begin on Monday (January 14) and he would not accept any delay in tackling the most sensitive issues.
Abbas said his chief negotiator, former Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, would meet with his Israeli counterpart, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, as part of U.S. President George W. Bush's push for a statehood agreement before leaving office.
"According to the negotiations we will begin this Monday, Mr. Abu Ala (Ahmed Qurie) and his team will meet the Minister if Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni to discuss final status issues," Abbas said in a speech in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
He added that 'all issues' will be discussed, referring to statehood borders, the future of Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees, and Jewish settlements.
The negotiators meeting, which will be held in Jerusalem, comes four days after Bush's visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank in which he set the goal of reaching a peace treaty before he leaves office in January 2009. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
