- Story Text: Continuing a four-day visit to the region, German President Christian Wulff arrived in the West bank town of Bethlehem on Tuesday (November 30).
Wulff was shown the Church of the Nativity, believed by Christians to be the birthplace of Christ.
The German President toured the church with local priests and dignitaries from Bethlehem, who explained the history of the ancient site.
Later on Tuesday, The German President is expected to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
On Monday (November 29), Wulff met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who said Germany could assist the stalled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
Israel and the Palestinians resumed peace negotiations in Washington on September 2 only to see them unravel within weeks after Israel's 10-month partial moratorium on Jewish settlement construction expired that month.
Washington wants Israel to renew the freeze on building settlements so that talks can resume with the Palestinians, who walked out of negotiations after just a few weeks when Israel refused to extend the settlement freeze. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
