We should not repeat the failure which we had in 2005. We must have a very successful outcome of this NPT( Nuclear Proliferation Treaty ) review conference so that the whole world can live without fear of nuclear weapons." - Story Text: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday (March 18) for talks which focused on progress towards new weapons treaty.
"The Secretary-General expressed special appreciation for the efforts of Russia and the United States to prepare a new treaty on strategic offensive weapons, which will doubtless have the most positive effect on the conduct of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference," said Lavrov.
Ban said he hoped a new deal on nuclear weapons reduction will be signed soon. "I sincerely hope that there will be a final signing of this treaty as soon as possible. This will have a hugely positive impact on the forthcoming Washington summit meeting on nuclear disarmament as well as the NPT (Nuclear Proliferation Treaty ) review conference which will be held in may in New York. We should not repeat the failure which we had in 2005. We must have a very successful outcome of this NPT( Nuclear Proliferation Treaty ) review conference so that the whole world can live without fear of nuclear weapons," he said.
Ban went on to meet Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for further talks where the spotlight was on the new START treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) and the impending meeting of international Middle East mediators in Moscow which starts on Friday (March 19).
The UN chief is due to head to the Middle East after Friday's meeting with the top diplomats of Russia, the United States and the European Union which together make up the quartet of mediators trying to restart the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
