- Story Text: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon arrived in Mongolia on Sunday (July 26), the beginning of a three-day trip focusing on environmental issues and the country's increasing contribution to international peacekeeping efforts.
At a welcoming ceremony in the capital of Ulan Bator lead by Mongolia's Foreign Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar, Ban praised the country of less than 3 million's increasing efforts in peacekeeping abroad.
"Mongolia has been playing very important role and contribution to peacekeeping operation in many parts of the world. And also Mongolia has been taking leadership role in meeting the target of Millennium Development Goals," he said.
Mongolia's Ministry of Defence announced last week that it planned to send at least 150 soldiers to Afghanistan, in the country's biggest contribution yet to international fighting with Taliban militants, media reports said.
Mongolian has already helped with peacekeeping efforts in other countries including Sierra Leone and Iraq.
later on Sunday, Ban was due to visit the Five Hills training centre, where he would see peacekeeping forces training for operations in Sierra Leone.
Ban's trip also aimed to raise awareness of the effects of climate change on Mongolia and was due to visit a traditional nomadic family later in the day.
Ban will also meet with President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and Prime minister Sanjaagiin Bayar on Monday (July 27). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
