- Story Text: At least one person was arrested on Tuesday (April 27) after scuffles broke out between anti-barrier activists and Israeli border police at the construction site of the controversial West Bank barrier.
Approximately a dozen activists disrupted construction of the barrier, blocking a bulldozer near the village of al-Walaja in the West Bank.
One activist fought with police as they tried to arrest him. He was eventually handcuffed and led away by the security forces.
Anti barrier demonstrators linked arms and sat in front of the path of the bulldozer, temporally halting construction activities. Israeli border police eventually broke up the protest, carrying foreign activists away from the construction site.
Israel began building its barrier of fences and walls at the height of the Palestinian uprising that began in 2000. The wall now runs along most of the West Bank border, encroaching at many points into Palestinian territory.
Israeli leaders say the barrier is a temporary obstacle, and could be removed once a peace agreement with the Palestinians is signed and attacks on Israel cease.
The International Court of Justice say the barrier is illegal and should be taken down because it crosses occupied territory. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
