- Story Text: Mourners in the West Bank cities of Hebron and Jenin buried two Palestinians on Friday (November 8) shot dead by the Israeli troops within several hours of each other.
An Israeli police spokesman said that one man was shot when he tried to stab a soldier at a West Bank checkpoint near Jerusalem on Friday. The man was said to have brandished a knife and ignored calls from paramilitary Border Police officers to stop before he was shot and killed.
Palestinian medical officials identified the man as 23-year-old Anas Foud Al-Atrash from Hebron in the southern West Bank.
In an earlier incident on Thursday (November 7) in another part of the West Bank, soldiers killed a man from Jenin, identified by relatives as 28-year-old university teacher Bashir Salem Habaniin, who fired a flare gun at Israelis at a roadside bus stop, a witness and Israeli authorities said.
But the uncle of the Palestinian man denied the reports.
"It is always untrue the Israeli story, they are always thirsty for the Palestinian blood. They do not care about the Palestinian opinion, they are ready to kill and move on. He was shot in his back as if he was not looking behind while walking in his way. the hobby of the Zionist nation is only to kill the Palestinians no matter if it is a baby or an old man," said Jihad Salem Habaniin.
The latest violence has coincided with efforts by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry who is visiting the region, to push forward peace talks and avoid what he said could be a "third Intifada," or Palestinian uprising against Israel.
Ten Palestinians have been shot dead in the occupied West Bank by Israeli troops and three Israelis have been killed since Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking resumed in July following a three-year freeze. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
