- Story Text: World Bank president, Jim Yong Kim, announced on Sunday (January 26) two billion dollars in funding for healthcare projects in Myanmar, during a two day visit to the country.
Jim Yong Kim met with Myanmar Public Health Minister, Dr. Pe Thet Khin, at North Dagon hospital in northern Yangon for a tour of the facilities.
After the visit, Yong Kim announced the 2 billion dollars funding to Myanmar which aimed to improve health care services for the poor.
"Today I am happy to announce that the World Bank group plans to invest 2 Billion dollars, to support key development priorities in Myanmar including dramatically improving access to health care and energy for all," said Kim.
He added that it aimed to expand access to vital services especially to reduce child mortality rates and maternal health, by controlling diseases such as HIV aids and Malaria.
An estimated 75 percent of Myanmar's mostly rural population lack access to quality healthcare, and high costs put most essential services out of reach for many Myanmar families who live below the poverty line.
Part of the funding will aim to expand electricity generation, transmission and distribution to help all citizens gain access to electricity by 2030.
President Kim is scheduled to meet with Myanmar president, Thein Sein and members of the government and opposition as well as business leaders in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday (January 27) Myanmar is one of the poorest countries in East Asia, with an estimated GDP per capita of between $800-$1,000 and a poverty headcount of 26 percent, according to the World Bank. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
