- Story Text: Several hundred Fatah supporters took to the street of the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Tuesday (December 27) to protest over President Mahmoud Abbas's choice of candidates for an upcoming parliamentary election, witnesses said.
The protesters who marched five kilometres from Deheishe refugee camp to Bethlehem's Fatah Headquarters burnt tyres and fired in the air, demanding Deheishe's candidate Mohammed Laham, to be located first on the Fatah list for elections. They argued he had won the district's primaries. "No elections in Bethlehem district until our candidate is back on the list," chanted one of the protesters as heavy smoke was rising above him. Unrest has been growing in Palestinian territories ahead of the election and some officials have urged Abbas to postpone the vote. Fatah, though long dominant, is struggling to cope with a split between veterans from a corruption-tainted old guard and younger members seeking a bigger share of influence. Islamic militant group Hamas poses a strong challenge. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
