- Story Text: Turks watched across the border into Syria as fighting raged between Iraqi Kurdish forces and Islamic State militants on Sunday (November 2).
Repeated volleys of gunfire could be heard ringing out from the hills of Kobani as a Reuters crew filmed from Turkey.
Thick plumes of smoke rose from the hillside two days after peshmerga forces began crossing the border from Turkey on pickup trucks carrying heavy weapons to help push back Islamic State insurgents encircling the mainly Kurdish town.
The peshmerga forces set off on Friday (October 31), in more than a dozen trucks and jeeps, escorted by armoured vehicles, from a holding point around 8 km (5 miles) from the border towards Kobani, which has been besieged for more than 40 days.
