- Story Text: Serb soldiers crossed into the remote Tropoje district
of northern Albania on Tuesday and fought border guards for
several hours before withdrawing, Western observers and
government officials have said.
Between 50 and 100 Serb troops crossed some 500 metres
(yards) into Albanian territory on Tuesday (April 13) and
surrounded the border post and hamlet at Kamenica, about 250
km (160 miles) north of the capital Tirana, the officials said.
Witnesses reported shelling in the northern district of
Tropoje, scene of heavy fighting between the ethnic Albanian
Kosovo Liberation Army and Yugoslav forces.
Osce officer in Tirana Andrea Angeli confirmed the Serb
forces had briefly crossed into Albania.
The Serb incursion was the first since NATO began pounding
Serb forces to try to stop them driving the majority Albanian
population out of Kosovo, and was condemned by NATO and the
United States.
"We have said very clearly that we condemn Serbian efforts
to try to widen this conflict and NATO has made very clear it
would consider with the utmost seriousness any attempt by the
Serbs to act beyond their borders," Albright said.
Albanian television later reported that the Serbs had
withdrawn from the village of Kamenica after exchanging heavy
fire with Albanian border guards.
