- Story Text: In the centre of Bangkok's royal plaza stands the equestrian statue of Thailand's late King Rama V, also known as Chulalongkorn the great. On Monday (Oct 23), the people remembered the anniversary of his death.
Dozens of multi-coloured wreaths surrounded the statue. University and school students were the first to pay homage to the late King.
Thailand's present King Bhumipol and Queen Sirikit arrived later to perform a religious ceremony -- and altar was erected for the purpose.
To mark the occasion, government departments, Universities, colleges, schools, banks and some other business firms in Bangkok and in adjoining provinces were closed for the day.
