- Story Text: The President of France, M. Valery Giscard d'Estaing, flew into brussels on Thursday (29 May) to attend a dinner given by King Baudouin of Belgium for the government leaders attending the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) summit.
Although President d'Estaing will not be taking part in the summit, the banquet gave him the opportunity for informal meetings with President Gerald Ford of the United States, and other heads of NATO governments.
The French President is the only NATO head of government not attending the summit meeting. He thinks it is unnecessary. His brief visit to Brussels was seen as a gesture of goodwill towards President Ford, with whom he forged good relations during talks on the French West Indian island of Martinique last December.
Before the banquet President d'Estaing and President Ford held a private meeting. The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, said that the two presidents felt strongly that they should discuss world problems, and their agenda would include Atlantic relations, the Middle East, energy and bilateral relations between France and the United States.
