- Story Text: Albanian health officials said on Wednesday (September 21) that an outbreak of cholera which has already claimed eight lives has spread to another region.
Albania's Koha Jone newspaper reported that cholera cases had been found in three new districts -- Dibra, Lezha and Elbasan.
The disease was first recorded two weeks ago in the region around Kucova, 110 kilometres (70 miles) south of Tirana. Since then there have been 103 confirmed cholera cases.
Officials said more than 250 people were also being treated in hospital with symptoms of the disease.
Cases of cholera have been confirmed in the southern towns of Korca, Berati and Librazhdi as well as the capital Tirana.
Residents of the capital have begun cleaning their flats and burning off garbage in a bid to disinfect parts of the city.
Before news of the latest outbreaks, World Health Organisation (WHO) officials on Sunday had said that the epidemic was not as bad as first believed.
WHO officials said the outbreak could be linked to cases appearing elsewhere in southern Europe. Outbreaks of cholera are also being monitored in Ukraine.
