- Story Text: Dominant Palestinian faction, Fatah, names Abbas as
presidential candidate.
The dominant Palestinian political faction Fatah on
Monday (November 22) named Mahmoud
Abbas as its candidate to succeed the late Yasser Arafat in
a presidential election scheduled for Jan. 9, officials
said.
"The Fatah central comittee has decided by consensus to
nominate brother Mahmoud Abbas, Abu Mazen, a member of
Fatah central comittee, and a comerade of the leader Abu
Amr (Yasser Arafat) to be the movement's nomininee for the
presidential elections for the Palestinian Authority,"
Tayeb Abdel-Rahim, a member of the Fatah central comittee
told reporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Abbas, 69 and a moderate former prime minister, is
favoured by Israel and the United States for his calls to
end a Palestinian armed uprising that erupted in the
Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip in September 2000.
Although he does not enjoy a strong power base among
Palestinians, Abbas is considered the frontrunner to
succeed Arafat on Jan. 9 -- the first such election since
1996.
