- Story Text: Friday prayers resume in the grand mosque in Banda
Aceh, the first since the tsunami hit.
Nearly two weeks ago, the Grand Mosque Baiturrahman
in Banda Aceh was full of dead bodies, a makeshift morque,
and later it became a refuge for the sick, injured and scared.
It now stood like a beacon of hope among a landscape of
wasteland, shining with a fresh coat of white paint
courtesy of Indonesian soldiers who have prepared it for
Friday prayers.
Thousands flocked Baiturrahman mosque on Friday
(January 7) to join for the first time with others in
prayer since the earthquake and tsunami on December 26.
For many in this northern Indonesian province -- the
hardest hit by the tsunami with two-thirds of the 150,000
dead -- the giant walls of water that crashed ashore still
left a traumatic memory to bear.
Yet coming to Friday's prayers brought them some kind
of solace and comfort.
"We are still deeply traumatised by what happened. We
even still have family members still missing. I have yet to
find my youngest child and I pray to Allah for his mercy
and compassion. And we hope to those who can to help
lighten the burden of the Acehnese people," said M. Kasim.
"I am very much touched by the many who turn up today
here, to pray here for the first time since the tsunami,"
said Effendi, an aid worker from North Sumatra.
