- Story Text: English Premier League giants Liverpool have arrived
in Thailand to a warm welcome. The team will play the national
side on Thursday (July 19) with thousands of fans expected to
turn up for the match.
The players were greeted by hundreds of hysterical
fans outside a hotel in Bangkok on Tuesday (July 17) as they
began the second leg of their Asian tour.
Security guards held back masses of screaming fans as the
players attended a photo-shoot for the media. Team manager
Gerard Houllier told a packed news conference that he is
looking forward to another season of trophy-winning at Anfield
-- last season Liverpool won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and English
League Cup.
He said: "The best thing is to believe in your
players...at the moment I believe in the squad, I believe in
the players. I think they can achieve even more in the league
at least, so we'll see if we have to move on the transfer. The
fact that some of our direct opponents are splashing out...a
lot of money, proves that they think Liverpool is a force to
be reckoned with," he said.
During an interview with journalists, striker Robbie
Fowler said talks on extending his Liverpool contract looked
"very promising" and that he never wanted to play for another
team.
"I am in the very early stages of negotiating a contract
with Liverpool. Once we get back to England, I think we will
speak a bit further. It looks very promising. I am very happy
and I have never said I want to go anywhere else," he said.
Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier said earlier this month
that he that he was confident that Fowler and fellow England
strikers Michael Owen would sign contract extensions.
Both players have two years to run on their present deals
and Houllier wants them to commit their long-term futures to
the Premier League club before the start of the new season.
Liverpool have already beaten Singapore 2-0 earlier in
their Asian trip and Houllier said he will use his entire
first-team squad during Thursday's fixture.
During a break in training on Tuesday Liverpool's top
players gave a coaching session to some young Thai footballers
in Bangkok.
