  • Story Text: Lord Shackleton, British Minister without Portfolio, and the chief of the British delegation which will discuss independence with the NLF, left London Airport for Geneva today (Monday). A few hours earlier, the NLF delegation arrived in Geneva, from Aden.

    The South Arabian National Liberation Front (NLF) will have a seven man delegation at the talk which start tomorrow. They will ask Britain for more than the 60 million sterling which Britain has promised.

    Mr. Qahtan Al-Shabi, leader of the NLF delegation, and the man tipped as being most likely to be the South Arabian Republic's first President, said he had arrived with high hopes of achieving the 'legal' demands of our people". He said the most important thing for his delegation was to ensure that the handover of power was completed by the end of November.

    The British will have a ten-man delegation at the talks. It will be the first time that British minister has met NLF leaders around a conference table since the start of the bloody independence struggle which was sparked off by a tribal uprising in the Radfan mountains on October 14th, 1963. Since then, known casualties have been 464 killed and 2,019 injured. More than two-third of the casualties were Arabs. The struggle also resulted also in the collapse of the eight-year-old British-sponsored South Arabian Federal Government on September 5th.

    The British have administered the region for 129 years.
