  • Story Text: Britain Monday (13 November) turned over the first of twelve Trident jet airliners ordered by The People's Republic of China in a ceremony at the manufacturing plant of Hawker Siddeley Aviation in Hatfield, U.K. At this ceremony the Chinese Ambassador, Sung Chih-kuang, announced a surprise new contract for eight more of the medium range jets.

    Hawker Chairman Sir Arnold Halls said the new contract was worth more than 25 million sterling in addition to the 43 million sterling of the first order. Ambassador Sung Chih-kuang disclosed that the contract for the new aircraft was signed in Peking last Friday (10 November).

    Two of the new batch of eight aircraft will be a new version known as the Super-Trident 38 which will have a range of 1,900 miles (3,000 kms) -- 400 miles (640 kms) more than the standard Trident.

    Following the hand-over, officials and guests were given a short demonstration flight in the Trident which is to be delivered to China within the next few days, over two months ahead of schedule.

    SYNOPSIS: The first of twelve Trident jet airliners ordered by The People's Republic of China was turned over in a ceremony in Hatfield, just north of London on Monday.

    Chinese Ambassador, Sung Chih-kuang, took possession of the aircraft for his government by accepting the log for the jet. This is the first of twelve such aircraft initially ordered by the Chinese.

    The Chinese Ambassador used the ceremony to announce a new order for more of the Trident jets.

    Following the ceremony and announcement of the new order, officials and guests were ushered on the aircraft--bearing markings of China--for a test ride.

    The contract for the sight new aircraft is said to be worth an additional twenty-five million sterling, in addition to the forty-three million sterling for the first order.

    The Trident is to be delivered to the Chinese within the next few days, more than two months ahead of schedule. Two of the aircraft in the new order will be a new version known as the Super-Trident 3B which will have an increased range of nineteen-hundred miles (3000 kms).
