- Story Text: A 26-year-old Italian national was shot dead during an attempted car theft in Brazil's business capital Sao Paulo on Saturday (July 21) night, just one day after moving to the South American country.
Tomasso Lotto, a junior investment banker, and a Spanish friend were approached by two armed men on a motorcycle when they stopped their car at a red light in a wealthy neighbourhood, local media reported.
According to witnesses, Lotto was shot twice when he opened the car door just as his friend ran out to hide behind a news-stand.
The Spaniard told police one of the men chased him with a gun before fleeing with his partner.
Lotto was rushed to a nearby hospital but died shortly after.
Police were still investigating the incident with the help of security camera footage from the surrounding the area.
Lotto's relatives arrived in Sao Paulo on Sunday night to make funeral arrangements and identify the body.
An unidentified woman who lives in a building next to the crime scene recalled what happened.
"I heard two gun shots and everyone went down to see what had happened," she said.
The Italian consulate helped Lotto's relatives with the legal issues and a representative escorted them to the morgue. His father and another unidentified relative covered their faces and avoided the media. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
