- Story Text: Stavros Stavrou, Chief of Staff to Cyprus underground leader General George Grivas, appeared in Nicosia District Court on Friday (August 10) following his arrest during a dawn police raid on Thursday. With him at the closed court hearing was another prominent member of Grivas' EOKA movement, Demitrakis Spourgitis, who was also arrested in the swoop.
Documents captured in the police raid in Limassol showed that plans existed to assassinate President Makarios on one of his regular daily car trips through Nicosia.
The police haul included a series of photographs showing two different routes followed by the President, notes on nearby buildings offering suitable firing positions, and plans to incapacitate heavy police guards along the way.
A former Cyprus army major, Stavrou -- whose code name is 'Syros' -- is the man tipped to succeed the ailing, 75-year-old Grivas should the leader die or retire.
Also on Friday, right and left-wing Greek-Cypriot trade unions joined forces to bring about a two-hour, island-wide stoppage in protest about recent 'lawlessness and violence' in Cyprus.
