- Story Text: Algerians protesting over the rise in the cost of living clashed with police on Wednesday (January 5) in cities and towns across the country.
In Algiers, youths pelted riot police with stones and other missiles, setting fire to garbage bins and tyres in the road as police fired back with tear gas and threw stones themselves.
The protesters chanted slogans denouncing the high cost of living and against the government, laying the blame on President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for not doing enough to alleviate the problems.
No official figures were given but a number of protesters and police were injured in the clashes.
At the start of the year, citizens in the North African state started to protest across the country when the government announced increases in price for basic commodities like oil and sugar.
Protesters are also angry at lack of water, power outages and poor distribution of social housing.
Further protests are anticipated as a lack of flour across the country is expected to lead to a shortage of bread, a basic food staple. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
