- Story Text: African leaders said on Tuesday (April 12) that they were determined to achieve a ceasefire in Libya and help put an end to the bloodshed in the North African country.
Meeting in the Algerian capital, the leaders said a peaceful solution had to be found.
"Our aim now is humanitarian, which is to stop the bloodshed of the Libyan people. Especially now, I believe that everyone is convinced that there is no military solution to this crisis. Wisdom suggests that our brothers in Libya sit together with the bodies that have good intentions and discuss the possible solution," said Ramtane Lamamra, the Commissioner of the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC).
The delegation of leaders from five African states arrived in Algiers on Monday after a two day visit to Libya where they met with Gaddafi in Tripoli and rebel representatives in Benghazi in a bid to mediate between the two sides.
"The most important thing for us is to continue on this path to find a solution for the rescue of the Libyan people, this is our goal and we are continuing it. Chairman Jean Pink will visit Doha, God willing, and will present and discuss the African plan. The first part of the plan is to cease fire from all sides in order to rescue the Libyan people and get them out of this current miserable situation they are living in. That is our aim and we are determined to realise it with God's will," said Mauritania's General Abdel Aziz after a meeting with the Algerian president.
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Monday accepted an African Union roadmap for ending the conflict in Libya including an immediate ceasefire.
However NATO said it would continue to target Gaddafi's forces as long as they continued to threaten civilians. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
