- Story Text: South African President Jacob Zuma met with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for bilateral talks on Monday (April 15).
The talks were expected to centre on regional developments, particularly the recent conflicts in Mali and Central African Republic as well as the general security situation in the Sahel and Maghreb regions.
Zuma is also due in Nigeria on Wednesday (April 17) where he is expected to have similar discussions with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
France, backed by many African nations including South Africa, launched an offensive in Mali in January pushing Islamists out of the northern towns.
France has started withdrawing its force, currently around 4,000 men, and plans to have just 1,000 by the end of the year.
Mali is due elections in July but experts warn of problems from insecurity, hundreds of thousands of people still living in refugee camps and a stalled political process. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
