- Story Text: Algerians in Oran celebrated the 60th anniversary of the start of the War of Independence on Saturday (November 1).
Gathering in the birthplace of the revolution, Oran, residents of all ages marked the occasion with traditional music, military parades, fireworks and dancing.
"We pay tribute to the one and a half million martyrs. The first of November is for us a humiliated people's victory, so smile and thank God," said Mayor of Oran Nourredine Boukhattem.
The revolution ran from 1954 to 1962 and led to Algeria gaining its independence from France.
The Front de Liberation Nationale party and the military have dominated politics since 1962.
The war of independence cost the lives of 1.5 million Algerians, the Algerian government says, and it has pushed for Paris to admit its part in the massacre of 45,000 Algerians who took to the streets to demand independence as Europe celebrated victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.
