- Story Text: Lebanese police collected a body from a Britain street on Monday (December 23) and it was later confirmed to be that of slain United States (U.S.) hostage William Higgins.
Police received a telephone call asking them to collect the body. It was then taken to the American University Hospital for tests to ascertain its identity.
Higgins, a Marine lieutenant-colonel, was abducted in south Lebanon in February 1988 while serving as a United Nations (U.S.) observer.
His pro-Iranian abductors claimed in July 1989 to have killed him in retaliation for Israeli's abduction of a Shiite Muslim cleric, Sheik Abdul-Karim Obeid. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
