- Story Text: Central Algiers ground to a halt as heavily armed security forces attempted to prevent demonstrators from marching through the city.
The socialist unions on Tuesday (June 30) attempted to march through the capital city of Algiers to protest against government policies and recent violence.
Security forces tried to prevent the demonstrators from marching and some protestors scuffled with the heavily armed police.
Algeria erupted in violence in early 1992, when the authorities cancelled a general election in which radical Islamists had taken a commanding lead.More than 65,000 people have since been killed, according to Western estimates.
